The San Antonio nonprofit community is saddened by the loss of Billy Mahone III, described as a compassionate advocate for people experiencing homelessness. Mahone passed away on Monday, July 10, at the age of 39, leaving behind his wife, Anissa.
At the time of his passing, Mahone held the position of senior director of strategic planning and partnerships at the South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless (SARAH). SARAH confirmed his death through a Facebook post on Tuesday, July 11, noting that he had joined the organization in 2021.
“Billy touched the lives of everyone he encountered,” stated SARAH’s Facebook post. “He exemplified kindness and empathy in his leadership.”
Mahone was an alumnus of Baylor University and a member of Leadership San Antonio’s Class 46 in 2022, a program by the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce that fosters leadership skills across different industries. Prior to his work at SARAH, Mahone held positions at Atlas Floors Carpet One in San Antonio, where he steadily rose to become the company’s president until December 2020, as indicated on his LinkedIn profile.
In recognition of his achievements, Mahone was selected as one of the San Antonio Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 this year. The prestigious list celebrates emerging business leaders in various sectors of the Alamo City. Speaking to the Business Journal, Mahone expressed his commitment to addressing homelessness by tackling its underlying causes and striving for sustainable solutions.
“We are facing a shortage of affordable and supportive housing across the board, particularly in the area of permanent supportive housing, which provides the only long-term solution for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness—those who have been homeless for 12 months or more while dealing with a disabling condition,” Mahone explained to the Business Journal.
In addition to his involvement with SARAH, Mahone served on the board of directors for Each One Teach One starting in 2022. He also worked closely with Thrive Outreach, a local ministry dedicated to providing meals and support to individuals experiencing homelessness.
“He was an inspiration to many, always radiating positivity, sporting a genuine smile, and embodying a gentle spirit while eagerly serving others,” wrote Thrive in a Facebook post.
SARAH expressed intentions to provide details about memorial services through their Facebook page as soon as they become available.
