Indianapolis, IN – IMPD Homicide Detectives arrested 28-year-old Derek McKenzie on Monday for a Christmas Day murder in Indianapolis. The shooting happened on the 4400 block of N. Kitley Avenue.

IMPD East District officers responded to a report of a shooting just after 11:00 a.m. They found a man inside a home with gunshot wounds. Medics transported him to a hospital, where he died.

Detectives gathered evidence and determined McKenzie was the suspect. They learned an argument inside the home led to the shooting. After working with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, police obtained an arrest warrant.

On February 3, 2025, IMPD VCU detectives found McKenzie at a residence on W. 27th Street. With help from the IMPD SWAT team, officers arrested him. Police seized firearms, including one with a machine gun conversion device.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide on formal charges. An arrest does not imply guilt.
