Whiting, IN – Residents are being urged to avoid Whihala Beach after more than 40 dead ducks washed ashore this week, raising concerns over a possible bird flu outbreak.

According to officials in Whiting, while testing has not yet been completed, the ducks are suspected of being infected with avian influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that ducks, geese, and other waterfowl are natural carriers of the virus and can spread it to other birds.

The Whiting Parks Department set aside two ducks for testing by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, while the others were removed. Some were reportedly frozen to the ground or encased in ice.

Officials advise residents to avoid the shoreline and leash pets to prevent exposure. Similar incidents have been reported on Chicago-area beaches.
