47-year-old Base Jumper Killed After Hitting Rock Wall, Falling 650 Feet in Washington

A base jumper in Washington died after his parachute failed to fully deploy, according to police.

The incident occurred around 8:40 a.m. on March 30 near Milepost 202 on U.S. Route 97 Alternate, according to a Facebook post from the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

Elliot Barstow, 47, fell from a cliff when his parachute malfunctioned, according to deputies.

When the parachute failed to deploy, the Entiat man spun 180 degrees in the air and collided with a rock wall, according to deputies.

Deputies said he then dropped 650 feet to his death.

Witnesses saw the incident and alerted authorities. Deputies said he was pronounced deceased when they arrived at the site.

Entiat is located in central Washington.
