Fairbanks, AK – A powerful blizzard is impacting Alaska’s Western Arctic Coast, bringing whiteout conditions, dangerously cold wind chills, and strong winds through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, the blizzard warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. AKST Sunday. Winds are expected to gust as high as 50 mph, reducing visibility to near zero at times. Wind chills could drop to a life-threatening -50°F, posing extreme frostbite risk in as little as 10 minutes.
The affected areas include Point Hope, Point Lay, and Cape Lisburne, where blowing and drifting snow will make travel extremely dangerous. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions against extreme cold.
The Alaska Department of Transportation advises checking road conditions by calling 511 before any travel. Residents should ensure they have emergency supplies, including extra layers, food, and water, in case of power outages or extended exposure.
The storm is expected to ease by Sunday evening, but hazardous conditions may persist into Monday.
