Reports of possible shooter on campus of Claremont McKenna College

Students and faculty at Claremont McKenna College were told to shelter in place after reports of a potential shooter on campus. 

According to The Student Life, the university’s paper, campus safety notified the school community at 4:55 p.m., saying there was police activity and a potential shooter on the campus.

At 5:15, faculty and students received another message to shelter in place and directed those off campus not to return.  

“Students on and near the borders of CMC’s campus were told to evacuate the area, running in clusters north towards Harvey Mudd College,” the school outlet reported. “Cars and individuals initially headed toward the area at the time were redirected to shelter by Campus Security. Many CMC students were also evacuated to Pitzer College.” 

Aerial footage of the campus captured Sky5 showed a SWAT Bearcat vehicle, as well as several police cruisers in front of the college and students, with hands on their heads, being escorted out of at least one campus building.

Police were also seen searching students moments before they allowed them return to at least one of the campus buildings.

In an update shortly after 6 p.m. the university’s Dean of Students office said that “Public safety and police are sweeping the buildings just to make sure everything is secure,” and informed students and faculty that if they hear police in the building not to panic.

Preliminary and unconfirmed information suggests that no victims have been found and there have been no additional reports of a shooter, though the scene remains active.

According to the school paper, evening classes classes have been canceled due to the ongoing threat on campus.
