Buffalo, NY – A powerful lake effect snowstorm is creating dangerous travel conditions across Buffalo and areas east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Snowfall rates are reaching up to 2 inches per hour in narrow, intense bands.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the snowfall is severely impacting visibility and causing deep snow accumulation on roadways. Major highways, including portions of Interstate 90 between Dunkirk and Angola, Route 219 near Boston and Springville, and Interstate 81 from Parish to Pulaski, remain hazardous for drivers.
Forecasters expect the snow bands to persist through today, making driving treacherous. Visibility within these snow bands can drop to near zero, and roads can quickly become impassable. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
Temperatures remain frigid, with highs near 21°F and wind gusts of up to 23 mph, compounding the risk for those traveling outdoors. Tonight, there’s a slight chance of additional snow showers, while another storm system could arrive late Wednesday into Thursday.
Emergency officials advise drivers to carry winter essentials, including blankets, flashlights, and water, in case they get stranded. Travelers should monitor updates from the National Weather Service for the latest warnings and road conditions.
Residents should also clear driveways and walkways promptly to prevent icy buildup. Buffalo’s Public Works Department has deployed plows to help keep major routes open.
