Blacksburg, VA – A Cold Weather Advisory and an Extreme Cold Warning have been issued for Ashe and Watauga counties in North Carolina, as well as Grayson and Bath counties in Virginia. Bitterly cold temperatures and dangerously low wind chills are expected over the next two days.
The Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills as low as 10 degrees below zero anticipated. The Extreme Cold Warning will take effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday to noon Wednesday, during which wind chills could plummet to 20 degrees below zero.
According to the National Weather Service, these conditions significantly increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed to the elements without proper precautions. Frostbite can occur within minutes in such extreme temperatures, and hypothermia is a risk with prolonged exposure.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, covering exposed skin with gloves, hats, and face masks, and limit outdoor activities. Those traveling should use caution and ensure vehicles are prepared for cold weather emergencies.
