Lubbock, TX – Residents in Lubbock are waking up to dangerously low wind chills this morning, with temperatures feeling as cold as -12°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the South Plains, effective until noon.
According to the NWS, wind chills between -5°F and -20°F are expected across the region, with the coldest conditions impacting outdoor workers and early commuters. Frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes without proper protection. Officials urge people to stay indoors whenever possible and bundle up if going outside is unavoidable.
Travelers should exercise caution on roads such as I-27 and U.S. Highway 84. Wind chill combined with lingering ice in some areas can create hazardous driving conditions. Residents are advised to check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure pets and livestock are sheltered.
The weather is expected to improve slightly by this afternoon, with highs reaching 36°F under sunny skies. However, temperatures will plunge again tonight, with lows near 22°F. By Wednesday, conditions will warm up slightly, with a high near 46°F and calmer winds.
Looking ahead, Lubbock can expect sunny skies and steadily rising temperatures through Friday, with highs reaching into the mid-50s. Overnight lows will remain cold, hovering in the 20s.
