Indianapolis, IN – A 17-year-old male was arrested Tuesday on multiple charges, including the killing of a domestic animal and dangerous possession of a firearm, following an investigation by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives.
According to IMPD, officers responded to a report from Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) on January 23 regarding a dog that had been shot and killed in the 3700 block of Hillside Avenue. Investigators determined that the juvenile suspect allegedly shot the dog in broad daylight while neighbors were present. Authorities say the dog did not belong to the suspect and was not acting aggressively at the time.
A Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy was in the area when the shooting occurred and spoke with witnesses, as well as the suspect, who allegedly provided a false name. IMPD detectives, assisted by community members and video footage, later identified the suspect and worked to locate him.
On January 28, investigators with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force (ICGTF) found the teen in the 3600 block of Baltimore Avenue. Officers reported seeing a handgun with a high-capacity magazine in his pocket, which was later determined to be stolen.
The teen was arrested on charges including criminal recklessness, false identity statement, and animal cruelty. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges.
