Illinois Winter Storm: 0.10” Ice and Heavy Snow to Create Dangerous Travel South of I-55 Wednesday

Chicago, IL – A powerful winter storm will bring heavy snow and up to 0.10 inches of ice south of I-55 on Wednesday, creating slick and hazardous travel conditionsacross Illinois. Snowfall totals could reach 6 inches, with the worst conditions expected during the afternoon and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, snowfall will begin early Wednesday, with the heaviest snow falling between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Travel conditions will deteriorate quickly, with snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour and winds of 20-25 mph reducing visibility.

South of I-55, freezing rain could lead to 0.10 inches of ice accumulation, increasing the risk of icy roads, slick surfaces, and dangerous driving conditions. The combination of ice and heavy snow will likely cause travel delays and hazardous commutes, especially on untreated roads.

Temperatures will stay between 20-30°F, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Residents are urged to limit travel if possible and allow extra time for commuting.
