Albuquerque, NM — A cold weather advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday, bringing dangerously low wind chills across central New Mexico. Wind chill values are expected to drop as low as -5°F in Albuquerque and down to -20°F in mountain regions, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

According to the National Weather Service, this advisory spans the Albuquerque metro area, Northwest Plateau, Jemez Mountains, and the Middle Rio Grande Valley. Bitter cold and wind gusts of up to 15 mph will make outdoor conditions hazardous, particularly along I-40 and high-altitude roads.

Residents are urged to dress warmly in layers and wear hats and gloves if venturing outside. Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals. Use portable heaters safely indoors, keeping them away from flammable items and ensuring proper ventilation.

Tuesday will see some relief with a sunny high of 35°F, though nighttime temperatures will dip to 8°F. The remainder of the week brings gradual warming, with highs reaching 52°F by Friday. However, lows will stay frigid, hovering in the teens most nights.

Drivers should take extra caution tonight, as icy conditions may develop on less-traveled roads. Stay informed on updates by visiting the National Weather Service or local traffic advisories.

With temperatures well below freezing, residents should winterize homes and vehicles and take steps to protect pets. These precautions will ensure safety until conditions improve later this week.
