Albuquerque, NM – An extreme cold warning has been issued for much of New Mexico from 5 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills expected to drop as low as -25°F in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning affects central, eastern, and western portions of the state, including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Raton Pass. A cold weather advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Monday for parts of the state, with wind chills currently as low as -10°F.

The dangerously low temperatures raise risks of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly for those outdoors without adequate protection. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members. To protect plumbing, officials recommend wrapping pipes or allowing faucets to drip.

Rural areas like the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Estancia Valley could experience the harshest conditions, with wind chills dropping to -20°F overnight.

The extreme cold is expected to ease by late Tuesday morning, but residents should remain vigilant and follow safety precautions during this weather event.
