Kankakee, IL – A blast of Arctic air will bring subzero temperatures and potentially life-threatening wind chills to Illinois starting Sunday. The National Weather Service warns that wind chills could drop as low as -30 degrees in some areas, with single-digit highs expected through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, ice jams are developing along the Kankakee River, prompting a flood watch for areas downstream, including Momence. Water levels may rise unpredictably near ice jams, creating localized flooding risks. Residents along the river are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions.

The frigid weather will also bring a chance of lake-effect snow near northeastern Porter County, Indiana, and scattered flurries across the region. Roadways, including Interstate 57 and State Route 17 near Kankakee, could become hazardous due to icy conditions and low visibility.

Experts advise limiting outdoor exposure during peak cold hours. Frostbite can occur within minutes when wind chills reach -25 or lower. Prepare by layering clothing, keeping emergency kits in vehicles, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.

The coldest stretch will arrive early Monday, with subzero lows statewide. Wind chills may dip to -25 to -30 degrees, especially during the morning hours. Warmer conditions are expected by Wednesday, but icy rivers may continue to pose flood threats.
