Cleveland, OH – An arctic air mass will bring extreme cold to Ohio starting Sunday, with wind chills dropping as low as -25 degrees. The dangerously cold weather is expected to persist through Wednesday, creating life-threatening conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, the extreme cold could lead to a rise in carbon monoxide poisoning as residents turn to alternative heat sources. Frostbite and hypothermia also pose significant risks, with exposed skin at risk of freezing within minutes.
Cities such as Cleveland, Akron, and Mansfield face an 80% or higher chance of apparent temperatures falling below -20 degrees by Tuesday night. Officials warn that frozen pipes, stranded vehicles, and potential power outages may worsen the situation.
Residents should layer clothing, limit outdoor activities, and bring pets indoors. Experts recommend avoiding the use of gas-powered generators or stoves indoors to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Homeowners should also drip faucets to avoid pipe freezing and keep emergency supplies ready.
With temperatures set to remain frigid for days, Ohioans are urged to monitor weather updates and check on neighbors who may need assistance. Officials emphasize that this could be the coldest air mass since December 2022, making preparation essential for survival.
Stay vigilant and follow the National Weather Service’s guidance to stay safe during this severe cold snap.
