Beth’s Cafe Faces Financial Strain as Egg Prices Climb in Seattle

Restaurants, bakeries, and eateries like Beth’s Cafe, which is well-known for its renowned 12-egg omelets, are feeling the strain of rising egg prices in Seattle.

A mainstay of the Seattle neighborhood since 1954, the cherished Greenlake cafe is currently struggling to adapt to rapidly rising expenses.

Washington is one of the top five states with the highest egg price hikes, according to recent data, primarily due to avian flu outbreaks that have severely damaged poultry supplies. Mason Reed, the owner of Beth’s, says the price increases are having a significant impact on businesses. The Federal Reserve found that the cost of a dozen eggs in U.S. cities has increased by more than 70% year over year.

“The insurance companies have decided they’re not going to protect the farms against bird flu,” Reed stated. “Essentially, doubling the prices of eggs effective immediately.”

Beth’s Cafe, which is well-known for its big servings and hefty “greasy spoon” breakfasts, has attracted both locals and visitors with its numerous omelets that contain six and twelve eggs as well as its endless supply of hash browns.

Reed, on the other hand, believes that there may be revisions in the near future due to the fact that egg prices continue to soar.

“We’re going to explore some plant-based egg alternatives, and then just alternative breakfasts. There’s lots of things we can eat for breakfast that don’t involve eggs,” Reed stated.

Customers are also feeling the effects of the price increases. Dan Sodomka, a resident of Seattle, claimed that even at the grocery store, the price of eggs has turned into a deterrent. “I feel like it would be cheaper to build a chicken coop and buy a flock of chickens, then it would be to invest in a months-worth of eggs,” Sodomka added.

Beyond the cost of food, there are other challenges to consider.

Due to the higher operating costs in Seattle, Reed claims that it is difficult for small, independent eateries to maintain their competitive edge in the city.
