Birmingham, AL – A dangerous cold snap is gripping central Alabama as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect from midnight Sunday until 11 a.m. Monday. Wind chills as low as zero are expected across the region, raising serious safety concerns.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, affected counties include Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, and Talladega, among others. Subfreezing temperatures may last long enough to damage exposed skin and cause frostbite or hypothermia.

The extreme cold could also lead to frozen and burst pipes, with temperatures expected to remain below freezing for extended periods. Residents are advised to wrap, drain, or let faucets drip to prevent pipe damage.

Precautionary measures include dressing in warm layers with hats, gloves, and face coverings when outdoors. Authorities recommend checking on vulnerable populations, such as elderly neighbors, and ensuring that pets remain indoors.

Portable heaters should be used with caution, and indoor use of generators or grills should be strictly avoided due to carbon monoxide risks.

The cold weather will ease later on Monday, but residents should remain cautious until temperatures climb above freezing. For updates, visit the NWS Birmingham website.
