Buffalo Weather Alert: Subzero Wind Chills and Up to 18 Inches of Snow by Wednesday

Buffalo, NY – Western New York is grappling with hazardous weather today as heavy lake effect snow and dangerously low wind chills impact the region. Snowfall totals could reach up to 18 inches in parts of Erie and Jefferson counties, while wind chills may plummet as low as 20 degrees below zero.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Major roadways like the New York State Thruway are expected to face poor visibility and challenging driving conditions. Snowfall rates could reach up to 3 inches per hour, especially near the Buffalo metro area.

Residents are urged to stay indoors when possible and bundle up if they must venture outside. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles.

Tonight, temperatures will drop to 1 degree Fahrenheit, with wind chill values dipping to 15 below zero. Snow is expected to taper off Wednesday afternoon but could leave behind another 3 to 6 inches in isolated areas.

Looking ahead, Thursday will bring a reprieve, with cloudy skies and highs near 25 degrees. Light snow chances return Friday, with daytime highs around 24 degrees and milder conditions into the weekend.
