Birmingham, AL – Alabama residents should prepare for frigid temperatures and potentially dangerous wind chills next week, with snow remaining a possibility in parts of the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham outlined two scenarios for winter weather expected early next week.
According to the NWS, one scenario has a 4-in-10 chance of low-pressure development in the northern Gulf of Mexico. If this occurs, central Alabama could experience accumulating snow on Tuesday. However, there is a higher likelihood of a second scenario—estimated at 6-in-10 odds—where low pressure does not develop, leaving the region cold and dry.
Dangerously low wind chills are forecasted by Monday morning, with values expected to drop below 10°F in many areas. Overnight lows will likely fall below 20°F, creating hazardous conditions for anyone exposed to the cold. Similar conditions could extend into Tuesday morning, with the added potential for snow depending on how the weather system develops.
The NWS advises residents to complete outdoor tasks by Friday before rain arrives late Friday night into Saturday morning. Preparations should include protecting pets, pipes, and plants, along with ensuring access to heat. Officials also caution against prolonged exposure to the extreme cold.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates closely as forecasters continue to refine predictions.
