Lincoln, IL – Patchy freezing fog could blanket parts of Central Illinois late Thursday into early Friday morning, creating potentially hazardous conditions. Forecasters say visibility may drop below half a mile, especially in areas south of I-72.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, prolonged freezing fog could make bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads slippery. Motorists traveling through the region should remain cautious during the evening and early morning hours. Visibility is expected to improve after 7 a.m. on Friday.

The NWS recommends several precautions for drivers. Use low-beam headlights to improve visibility in foggy conditions. Slow down, and maintain extra distance between vehicles to avoid sudden collisions. Drivers should also watch for icy patches on roads and bridges where moisture could freeze overnight.

Areas under the highest risk for visibility drops are highlighted on the NWS advisory map, covering parts of Central Illinois south of I-72. Rural highways and bridges are especially vulnerable to fog-related hazards.

Freezing fog forms when moisture condenses and freezes on cold surfaces, creating a thin, slippery layer of ice. Combined with low visibility, these conditions can significantly increase the risk of accidents.

Travelers are encouraged to check weather updates before heading out. Officials suggest postponing non-essential trips until conditions improve later in the morning.

The NWS advises residents to remain vigilant as temperatures remain below freezing overnight. For additional weather updates, visit the National Weather Service website or follow local weather alerts.
