Springfield, IL – A winter storm is set to bring snow, freezing rain, and sleet to Illinois on Wednesday, creating hazardous travel conditions. The storm will begin early Wednesday morning and last into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, snow accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 6 inches, primarily north of Interstate 72. A mix of freezing rain and sleet is more likely south of I-70, where ice accumulation could reach up to 0.2 inches.

The heaviest snowfall is forecasted between noon and 6 p.m., potentially affecting the evening commute. Ice accumulation could cause power outages and downed branches in areas where freezing rain reaches 0.25 inches.

Drivers should expect slick roads and reduced visibility. Authorities urge residents to limit travel if possible and use extreme caution when driving.

Temperatures will remain near freezing throughout the storm, increasing the risk of icy conditions overnight. Road crews are preparing to treat major highways and bridges.

Residents should monitor weather updates and prepare for possible delays. Those in affected areas should secure loose outdoor objects and have emergency supplies ready.
