Binghamton, NY – A lake effect snow event is set to bring heavy snowfall and icy roads across Central New York through Wednesday night, creating hazardous travel conditions. Key roadways, including Interstate 81, will see low visibility and slippery surfaces as snow accumulations of up to 8 inches are forecasted in northern areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, the most intense snow bands will affect Northern Oneida County today before shifting south into Onondaga and Madison counties by this evening. Commuters in Syracuse should prepare for treacherous road conditions on Wednesday morning and evening, with temperatures dropping to the low 20s.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas under lake effect snow warnings. Snowfall is expected to ease late Wednesday night, with light flurries lingering into early Thursday.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring mostly cloudy skies with slight chances of snow, while Friday offers a break with partly sunny conditions and highs near 33°F. However, a new system could bring a mix of rain and snow to the region on Saturday.
Motorists should stay updated with local weather alerts and plan extra time for commutes. Use extreme caution when driving near snowplows and avoid sudden braking on icy roads.
