Champaign, IL – A major weather shift is coming to Champaign, with freezing rain, thunderstorms, and plummeting temperatures expected midweek. Residents should prepare for hazardous road conditions and potential ice accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday will be mild, with highs near 41°F and mostly sunny skies. However, by early Wednesday morning, freezing rain could develop before transitioning to steady rain in the afternoon, with highs near 37°F. Winds will pick up to 19 mph, and ice accumulation could make roads slick.
Wednesday night will bring a 90% chance of rain and thunderstorms, with possible new ice formation. Overnight temperatures will drop to 36°F, increasing the risk of freezing rain into Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon, conditions will clear, but temperatures will only reach 45°F before falling again Thursday night to 22°F.
Drivers should remain cautious, especially along I-57 and local highways. Rain and ice could cause travel disruptions, and wind gusts may reach 29 mph. Stay updated on changing conditions and drive carefully.
