Grand Junction, CO – A flood watch has been issued for portions of west-central Colorado, including Carbondale, Basalt, and Snowmass, due to the potential release of an ice jam on the Roaring Fork River. The alert remains in effect until Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, ice buildup caused by recent colder temperatures may release as conditions moderate this week. This could lead to a sudden increase in water levels and debris flow along the Roaring Fork River, posing risks to anglers and those near the water.

Emergency management officials urge caution near the river. They recommend avoiding low-lying areas and seeking higher ground if water levels rise. The areas of greatest concern include the Central Colorado River Basin and the Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on conditions by monitoring the National Weather Service website at weather.gov and following local emergency management directives.

Flash flooding caused by ice jams can occur rapidly and with little warning, making preparedness essential. Keep a safe distance from riverbanks and watch for floating ice or debris.

The watch will remain active until 11 p.m. Friday unless conditions improve.
