La Grange, IL – The La Grange community is mourning the loss of 8-year-old Michael Meagher, an Illinois boy fatally shot in Wisconsin early Monday morning.

Michael, a second-grader at Brook Park Elementary School, was shot at a residence on Lincoln Avenue in the Town of Geneva. Police responded at approximately 2:25 a.m. and found the boy with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Steven Merkel Jr., 52, of the same residence, has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide in connection with the shooting. Investigators have not released further details about the incident, which remains under investigation.

Michael’s school described him as a bright and kind child. “Michael brought incredible energy and kindness to our school community, and he will be deeply missed,” the district said in a statement.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist Michael’s family with funeral expenses. The fundraiser, which has raised over $13,000 of its $16,000 goal, will support Michael’s parents and his two sisters, Marissa and Madeline.

Community members are encouraged to donate or share the fundraiser to help the family during this tragic time.
