Washington, DC – The DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area is under a Winter Storm Warning as heavy snow is forecast to fall at rates of up to 1 inch per hour on Sunday. The storm is expected to bring 3-6 inches of accumulation, creating hazardous conditions on major roadways, including I-95.

The National Weather Service warns that snowfall will begin early Sunday morning, intensify during the late morning and early afternoon, and taper off by evening. Gusty winds of up to 35 mph will contribute to blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and posing a risk of downed tree branches and power outages.

Timing and Local Impact

Snow is expected to start around 7 a.m. Sunday, with the heaviest rates of 1 inch per hour occurring between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. This will coincide with strong winds, making travel treacherous. Roadways across Northern Virginia, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, and the District will be particularly impacted.

Temperatures will drop into the low 20s Sunday night, increasing the risk of icy patches on untreated roads. Drivers are strongly urged to delay nonessential travel until conditions improve.

Power outages may occur in areas with wet, heavy snow accumulating on power lines and trees. Local utilities, including Pepco and Dominion Energy, are monitoring conditions and have crews on standby.

Five-Day DMV Weather Outlook

Sunday Night: Snow tapers off by evening. Low temperatures in the 20s could create icy conditions.

• Monday: Partly sunny and cold, with highs near 25°F.

• Tuesday-Wednesday: Chance of Snow, High near 23.

Prepare Now

Residents should take precautions before the storm begins. If travel is unavoidable, ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits, including blankets, flashlights, food, and water. Roads will be dangerous during the heaviest snow and wind gusts.

For those staying home, stock up on essentials, check your heating systems, and prepare for possible power outages. Additionally, check on elderly neighbors or those who may need extra help during the storm.
