Extreme Cold Advisory in Sioux Falls: Frostbite Risks as Wind Chills Plunge Sunday Through Tuesday

Sioux Falls, SD – A powerful Arctic front is set to plunge South Dakota into dangerously cold conditions beginning Saturday night, with wind chills dropping as low as -35°. Residents are urged to take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia, as prolonged exposure to the cold can be life-threatening.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, wind chill values between -25° and -35° will persist through Tuesday. Overnight lows will dip to -12° Sunday, with daytime highs struggling to exceed single digits. Strong northwest winds up to 25 mph will exacerbate the bitter cold.

Travelers on I-29 and surrounding roads should exercise extreme caution, as frostbite can occur within 10 minutes on exposed skin. Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Pet owners should ensure animals are sheltered from the extreme cold.

The five-day forecast shows some improvement midweek. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly by Wednesday, reaching highs near 31°, though another cold front may follow. For now, Sunday’s high is forecasted at just 6°, followed by Monday’s at 4°, keeping the region locked in Arctic conditions.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. Saturday through Sunday noon. The public is urged to monitor local updates and avoid unnecessary travel.
