Extreme Cold in Indianapolis: Frostbite Risk and Travel Safety for Sunday Night Into Monday

Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana residents should prepare for dangerously low temperatures as an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect Sunday night into Monday. Wind chills could drop as low as -25 degrees, posing serious risks for frostbite and hypothermia in under 30 minutes of exposure.

According to the National Weather Service, the bitter cold will follow a mix of rain and snow on Saturday, with light snow showers lingering into Sunday morning. Temperatures will plummet Sunday evening, and winds could gust up to 25 mph, significantly worsening conditions.

Local roads, including I-65 and I-465, could become slick with freezing precipitation early this weekend, and black ice is a potential hazard. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, particularly during the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday.

Five-Day Forecast

Saturday: Rain and snow, high of 37°F falling to the low 30s by evening.

Sunday: Cloudy with snow showers possible, high of 20°F. Temperatures will drop to -2°F by night.

Monday (MLK Day): Partly sunny and bitterly cold, high near 10°F with wind chills remaining below zero.

Tuesday: Sunny but frigid, high of 7°F.

Wednesday: A slight warm-up to 21°F, mostly sunny skies.

Residents should wear layered clothing, gloves, and hats to prevent frostbite, and bring pets indoors. Be sure to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly, during this extreme weather event.
