Kankakee, IL – Dangerously cold temperatures have forced several Kankakee County schools, including those in Bourbonnais, to shift to remote learning on Tuesday. School districts cited safety concerns as wind chills are expected to reach hazardous levels.
Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School District 307 and Bourbonnais Elementary School District 53 both announced closures. Bishop McNamara Catholic School will hold an e-learning day, asking students to access assignments via Canvas. Herscher Community Unit School District 2 also confirmed closures, stating student safety remains the priority.
According to the National Weather Service, frostbite can occur in minutes under the expected conditions. School officials urge families to monitor updates for extracurricular activities, many of which remain in question due to the extreme cold.
Residents in Kankakee County are encouraged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and check on vulnerable individuals. Schools across the county plan to communicate updates throughout the day via social media and email.
