Extreme Cold Warning in North Dakota: Wind Chills as Low as -55 Until Tuesday Noon

Bismarck, ND – An extreme cold warning is in effect for North Dakota, with dangerously low wind chills reaching as low as 55 below zero. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued two alerts covering the state, emphasizing the risk of frostbite in under five minutes on exposed skin.

According to the NWS, the Extreme Cold Warning remains in place until 2 p.m. CST Monday for areas south and west of the Missouri River. A Cold Weather Advisory will follow from 2 p.m. Monday to noon Tuesday. Areas north and east of the Missouri River will remain under the Extreme Cold Warning until noon Tuesday.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and dress in multiple layers to reduce risks. The coldest conditions are expected overnight Sunday into Monday morning, with slight improvement later Monday.

Travelers are advised to prepare emergency kits, including blankets and water, as vehicle breakdowns could be life-threatening in such conditions. Officials stress that frostbite can occur in minutes, underscoring the need for caution.
