Mobile, AL – Residents in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi are bracing for frigid temperatures as an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, wind chills could drop as low as 8°F in affected areas, including Mobile, Pensacola, and parts of southeast Mississippi. The watch will remain in effect through Monday morning, with dangerously cold temperatures expected to impact millions.
Officials warn that frostbite and hypothermia are serious risks during this period. Residents are encouraged to dress in multiple layers, covering exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face masks if venturing outdoors.
To safeguard homes, wrap or drain exposed water pipes and allow faucets to drip slowly. Pets should remain indoors to avoid exposure to the extreme cold.
The areas under the watch include southwest Alabama, northwest Florida, and southeast Mississippi. Weather officials recommend monitoring local forecasts for updates and limiting time spent outdoors during the coldest hours.
While temperatures are expected to rise slightly Monday afternoon, residents are urged to take precautions now to avoid cold-related injuries and damage.
