Fatal Shooting in Boyle Heights: Woman Killed in Park Altercation

A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon at Boyle Heights’ Ross Valencia Community Park, resulting in the shooting death of a woman. Authorities were alerted to the situation at approximately 2:08 pm after receiving reports of gunshots in the vicinity. Notably, the park is situated just across the street from the Hollenbeck Police station in Boyle Heights.

According to an official from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the perpetrator, described as a female of Hispanic descent, was embroiled in a heated argument with the victim when the fatal event occurred. In a shocking turn of events, the suspect produced a handgun and fatally shot the victim before fleeing on foot. Tragically, the victim was declared deceased at the scene by first responders.

Initially identified by the police as a Black woman, the victim was later confirmed to be 56-year-old Monica Jenniches, a Hispanic female, by friends and family. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office officially verified the victim’s identity and ethnicity.

Although details about the suspect remain limited, law enforcement authorities do not believe that this incident was related to gang activity. Regrettably, this marks the 18th reported homicide in Boyle Heights in the year 2023.
