Washington, D.C. – Fitbit, Inc. has agreed to pay a $12.25 million civil penalty following allegations of failing to promptly report burn hazards associated with its Ionic smartwatches, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday.
According to the CPSC, Fitbit received numerous reports between 2018 and 2020 of the Ionic smartwatch batteries overheating, resulting in burns, including second- and third-degree injuries. Despite issuing a recall in March 2022 for approximately 1 million devices in the U.S., the Commission alleged Fitbit delayed notifying authorities of the risk.
The settlement includes compliance measures, such as internal audits and reporting on safety protocols.
