Tallahassee, FL – A cold weather advisory is in effect for portions of Florida’s Big Bend and South Georgia until 11 a.m. Thursday, as temperatures are expected to drop as low as 16°F.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory includes Jefferson, Madison, and Taylor counties in Florida, as well as several areas in South Georgia, such as Thomas, Lowndes, and Tift counties. Residents in cities like Tallahassee, Valdosta, and Thomasville should prepare for freezing conditions.

Officials warn that prolonged exposure to the cold could cause frostbite or hypothermia, especially if proper precautions are not taken. Outdoor pipes are at risk of freezing and rupturing, prompting advice to wrap, drain, or allow them to drip. Residents with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain and protect above-ground components.

Pets and livestock should be sheltered, with access to food and unfrozen water. People are also urged to check on elderly neighbors and use portable heaters safely.

Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing after mid-morning Thursday, but residents are urged to prepare for another cold night as conditions may persist.
