Tallahassee, FL – Residents in the Florida Panhandle should prepare for a significant winter storm starting Tuesday afternoon. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow could make roadways treacherous, with power outages possible in areas experiencing ice accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, freezing rain is expected to begin in the afternoon, continuing through early Wednesday morning. The heaviest precipitation will likely occur Tuesday evening, with hazardous driving conditions anticipated across major routes, including I-10 and U.S. 231. Temperatures will drop below freezing, creating icy conditions on roads and bridges, increasing the risk of accidents.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare emergency supplies, including flashlights, blankets, and non-perishable food. Road closures could occur, and local authorities urge checking the latest updates before leaving home. Travel plans should be finalized before the storm begins.
The Panhandle could also see isolated power outages as freezing rain coats tree branches and powerlines. Additionally, bitterly cold wind chills will follow the storm, with lows dipping into the 20s by Wednesday morning.
Looking ahead, the region will remain cold through the week, with daytime highs barely reaching the 40s. Sunshine is expected to return by Thursday, but temperatures will stay well below average. Residents should remain vigilant and monitor local forecasts for updates on evolving conditions.
