Tallahassee, FL – A rare winter storm is blanketing the Florida Panhandle and parts of southern Georgia and Alabama, bringing snow, ice, and hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, in effect until 10 a.m. EST Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, additional snow accumulations of up to 4 inches are expected near the Flint River Valley, with ice accumulations reaching up to 0.2 inches in some areas. The Big Bend region could see lighter snowfall but remains under threat of icy roads and downed power lines.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are particularly vulnerable to slick conditions, prompting authorities to discourage travel. Power outages are also possible as ice accumulates on tree limbs and power lines. The hazardous conditions are expected to affect both the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.
Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. For those venturing out, officials recommend dressing in layers and carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.
For updates on road conditions, travelers can dial 511. Local power companies advise reporting any outages immediately and avoiding downed power lines.
