West Hempstead, NY – A former New York State Trooper has been arrested on allegations of filing a false shooting report. Authorities charged Thomas J. Mascia, 27, with allegations including tampering with physical evidence, falsely reporting an incident, and official misconduct. Mascia has resigned from his position with the State Police.

According to New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James and Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, Mascia reported being shot in the leg on October 30 while assisting a disabled vehicle on the Southern State Parkway. Investigators later determined Mascia shot himself and fabricated the story.

Authorities found no evidence of a disabled vehicle or the suspects Mascia described. A search of Mascia’s home uncovered an illegally possessed firearm, leading to additional charges against Mascia’s parents, Thomas Mascia Sr., 62, and Dorothy Mascia, 55.

The Mascias were arraigned in Hempstead and released. They are due back in court on February 5 at 9 a.m.

The incident sparked a large-scale police response before investigators uncovered inconsistencies. Officials say Mascia’s actions violated public trust.
