Fort Lauderdale Suspect Captured in Chase, Just Weeks After Prison Release for Home Invasion

After spending time for an armed home invasion robbery in 2022, the suspect who was apprehended Monday in Fort Lauderdale after a high-speed pursuit that resulted in a PIT maneuver and a rollover collision had only been out of jail for a month.

According to government documents, the victim was stabbed and assaulted with an AK-47-style weapon during the 2022 incident. The defendant was arrested on suspicion of aggravated fleeing with injury or damage.

He was identified as 20-year-old Dorshawn Tate Jr. The incident started when troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Burglary Apprehension Team spied on a suspect who had outstanding warrants in the vicinity of Arizona Avenue and Houston Street.

When the Florida Highway Patrol attempted a traffic check, Tate and three other people were apparently in a black Mercedes SUV. But the car ran away, and a chase ensued.

The SUV’s driver got out of the car during the pursuit and tried to run away on foot, but police immediately caught him. Up until the Florida Highway Patrol used a PIT technique to stop the SUV, the three surviving suspects persisted in their escape attempt.

The SUV crashed and rolled over on Sunrise Boulevard, just east of Interstate 95, as a result of the maneuver. The three people that were inside the car were arrested.

The Florida Highway Patrol released video that captured the moment police used the PIT maneuver on the escaping SUV. Three guns were found inside the car by law enforcement.

Tate was then arrested along with Sherod Thomas Morley, a 24-year-old resident of Fort Lauderdale who is accused of several offenses, including grand theft of a car and burglary.

The identities of the other two people who were arrested have not yet been made public by authorities.

Tate’s criminal past includes his participation in the September 26, 2022, brutal armed house invasion robbery in Coral Springs. Reports state that the victim had just opened his door to get an Amazon parcel when six to eight black-clad masked people with rifles and handguns entered the house.

Tate stabbed the victim in the back with a knife and struck him with an AK-47-style firearm during the heist.

An iPhone, $1,200 in cash, marijuana, and nine pairs of designer shoes—including ones from Balenciaga, Gucci, Dior, Versace, Burberry, Nike, and Kappa—were among the valuables taken from the victim by the attackers.

Tate was connected to the crime by law authorities using DNA evidence found in the AK-47 and the knife.

After being apprehended in 2023, he was found guilty of aggravated battery in connection with the house invasion and given a one-year and one-day jail sentence.

Tate served his sentence and was released from prison on December 4, 2024, according to documents from the Florida Department of Corrections.

Tate’s continuous involvement in criminal activity despite his previous incarceration is highlighted by this most recent event, which also underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address community public safety concerns.
