GEMA Announces New Program for Those Who Lost Housing Due to Helene

As a result of Hurricane Helene, the State of Georgia may be able to provide temporary lodging for those who have experienced significant damage or destruction to their homes.

The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) made the announcement on Tuesday on this program, which is known as the Housing Emergency Assistance and Recovery Through Sheltering (HEARTS) program.

The HEARTS program is intended to provide temporary housing to citizens of Georgia whose homes have been judged unusable as a result of the damage that Hurricane Helene has had on the state. Residents of counties that have been formally designated as being eligible for assistance programs offered by FEMA will be able to participate in the program.

Residents who have homes that have been “majorly damaged, destroyed, or deemed not habitable” may be eligible for temporary housing through the program, according to the GEMA/HS.

The program will make arrangements for temporary stays in hotels or motels for individuals who are unable to relocate to rental homes or apartments where they can live.
