Atlanta, GA – Residents in parts of north and central Georgia are under an Extreme Cold Warning starting at 1 a.m. Monday and lasting until noon. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts wind chills as low as 4 degrees below zero across the region.
According to the NWS Peachtree City office, the advisory affects cities including Atlanta, Gainesville, Decatur, and Cartersville, as well as rural communities in Fannin, Lumpkin, and Forsyth counties. This prolonged freezing weather poses risks to water pipes and outdoor pets.
The NWS urges residents to dress in layers, covering extremities with hats, gloves, and masks when outside. To prevent pipes from bursting, allow faucets to drip slowly or wrap exposed pipes.
Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly by Monday afternoon, but this marks one of the coldest events in Georgia this winter. Wind chills this low are uncommon in the area and can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Residents are also reminded to check on vulnerable neighbors and avoid unnecessary travel overnight. For updates, monitor alerts from the National Weather Service.
