Hammond, IN – Murder Suspect Arrested in Gary Shooting Investigation

Hammond, IN – A man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in Gary was arrested Wednesday after a SWAT team raid at a home in Hammond.

According to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in the 6300 block of Tennessee Street, where they found  Damonte S. Crawford, also known as Damonte S. Jones, hiding in the basement. A Gary Police K9 assisted in the arrest.

Crawford was transported to the Lake County Jail and faces multiple charges, including one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and firearm enhancements for allegedly using a gun during the crime. Another individual was also taken into custody, and charges will be reviewed by the prosecutor’s office.

The charges stem from a January 21 shooting at a residence in the 2100 block of Delaware Street in Gary. Police responded around 10:28 p.m. and found a 22-year-old woman from East Chicago with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital for treatment.

Inside the home, officers discovered a 26-year-old Gary man unresponsive in the kitchen. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts. A third victim, a 31-year-old man from Chicago, was also shot and taken to the hospital.
