Columbia, SC – A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of central South Carolina and east-central Georgia until 1 a.m. Friday. Strong winds and hazardous lake conditions have prompted officials to warn boaters to exercise extreme caution.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia, west winds will reach speeds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. These conditions are expected to produce rough waves, creating dangerous situations for small watercraft. The affected areas include lakes across Aiken, Lexington, Richland, and Edgefield counties in South Carolina, as well as portions of Richmond and Burke counties in Georgia.
The advisory highlights the potential risks for boaters, particularly those using smaller vessels that may struggle to navigate rough waters. Boaters are advised to stay near the shore, wear life jackets, and avoid unnecessary travel on the water.
Weather officials also recommend that residents secure outdoor items that could be blown away by gusty winds. Those living near lakes should prepare for possible debris carried by strong winds.
The advisory will remain in effect until early Friday morning, with conditions expected to improve as the winds subside. The NWS emphasizes the importance of staying informed through local updates and official alerts.
Boaters and residents should monitor changing weather conditions to ensure their safety. For additional details, visit the National Weather Service website or follow local emergency management updates.
