Boonville, NY – Northern Oneida County is facing a heavy lake effect snow warning, set to continue until 7 a.m. Wednesday. Forecasters predict additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches in the heaviest bands.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the strongest snow bands will bring reduced visibility and treacherous road conditions. Motorists are advised to prepare for hazardous travel, especially during the Wednesday morning commute. Outside the most intense bands, snowfall totals will be lower, but conditions remain unpredictable.
The NWS warned that lake effect snow can create extreme variability within a small area. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing weather, from intense snowfall to clear skies within a few miles. Visibility may drop quickly in snow bands, making travel more dangerous.
Authorities recommend carrying an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water if travel is necessary. Those venturing out should check the latest road conditions by dialing 511 or using state transportation apps.
Boonville and surrounding areas will also experience slippery roadways and fluctuating visibility through the evening and into the night. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, compounding the challenges for travelers.
Residents are urged to limit unnecessary travel and stay updated on the storm’s progress. Emergency services advise staying home if possible to avoid accidents or becoming stranded.
Northern Oneida remains under close watch as the storm develops. Additional updates will follow if conditions worsen.
