Chicago, IL – Ice jams forming on Illinois rivers are raising concerns for potential flooding this week as freezing temperatures persist.
The National Weather Service issued a hydrologic outlook Tuesday morning, warning of heightened flood risks along the Kankakee, Des Plaines, Rock, and Fox Rivers. Bitterly cold temperatures have led to significant ice buildup, creating favorable conditions for ice jams to develop. Minor ice jams have already been reported on several waterways, prompting caution for sudden river level rises and localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, ice jams can form quickly and without much warning, obstructing water flow and causing water levels to surge upstream. Tributaries of the Kankakee and Des Plaines Rivers are also at risk. Even as temperatures rise slightly this weekend, they are unlikely to melt existing ice, leaving rivers vulnerable to further jams.
Officials warn that fluctuating river levels could damage nearby infrastructure and flood low-lying areas. Residents along these rivers are advised to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential evacuation. Emergency preparedness includes moving valuables to higher ground and securing outdoor items that could be swept away.
Another cold snap predicted for next week could extend the risk of ice formation and exacerbate existing jams. River watchers and local agencies continue to monitor conditions closely.
The National Weather Service will provide an updated outlook on Wednesday to address the evolving flood threat. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take precautionary measures as river conditions change.
