Nebraska – The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for portions of Nebraska and Iowa, effective Saturday at midnight. Dangerously low wind chills are forecast to last through Tuesday at noon.
According to the advisory, wind chills could plummet as low as 30 below zero. Affected areas include cities like Omaha, Norfolk, and Council Bluffs. Residents are warned that frostbite can develop on exposed skin in just 30 minutes under these conditions.
The advisory also cautions against unnecessary travel and urges people to wear layered clothing, hats, and gloves if venturing outdoors. Cold weather shelters are open in many communities, providing vital warmth for those in need.
The advisory remains in effect as arctic air sweeps across the region, delivering its coldest punch on Sunday and Monday. Travel disruptions and outdoor activity cancellations are expected.
Officials stress the importance of preparedness, encouraging residents to monitor weather updates and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The bitter cold is forecast to ease gradually by Tuesday afternoon.
