Homewood, IL – A new phishing scam is targeting Illinois drivers with fraudulent text messages demanding toll payments. The messages falsely claim recipients owe unpaid tolls and urge them to pay immediately.

According to the Village of Homewood Police Department, scammers send texts that include a fake outstanding toll amount. The message contains a fraudulent link leading to a phishing website. If clicked, it may steal personal or financial information.

Authorities urge drivers not to click suspicious links or provide sensitive information. Instead, check your account directly at the official Illinois Tollway website or call customer service at 1-800-824-7277 on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Victims of phishing attempts should report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at https://www.ic3.gov/. The Illinois Tollway also provides fraud information at https://agency.illinoistollway.com/fraudulent-electronic-communication.

Law enforcement officials remind residents to verify toll payments through official channels and to remain cautious of unsolicited messages.
