Chicago, IL – Dangerous sub-zero temperatures and wind chills as low as -40°F are set to grip Illinois through Wednesday morning, creating hazardous conditions statewide.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, the coldest period will occur Monday night into Tuesday morning, with minimum wind chills ranging from -20°F to -29°F in areas near and north of Interstate 80. Wind chill values could reach as low as -40°F in some areas, posing severe frostbite risks for those outdoors.
Residents near rivers, including the Kankakee River at Momence, should also remain alert to potential ice jams. A Flood Watch remains in effect until further notice due to localized flooding risks.
Safety measures include limiting outdoor exposure, covering exposed skin, and ensuring pets remain indoors. The NWS advises wearing layers of water-resistant clothing and avoiding extended time outdoors.
Sub-zero conditions are expected to persist each night, with daytime highs struggling to rise above single digits. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the NWS website and prepare for extended cold weather impacts.
