Fort Wayne, IN – Motorists in northern Indiana should prepare for hazardous driving conditions tonight as temperatures fall below freezing. The National Weather Service has issued a black ice warning due to melting snow refreezing on untreated roads.
According to the National Weather Service, icy patches are expected to form rapidly after sunset on Thursday, especially in open areas prone to blowing snow. Roads, bridges, and overpasses in regions like Allen and DeKalb counties are likely to become slick, posing risks for evening and overnight travelers.
Weekend Weather: Snow and Plunging Temperatures
The frigid weather will continue into the weekend, with snow showers beginning late Friday night. Saturday will see a 40% chance of snow during the morning, tapering off by the afternoon. Highs on Saturday are expected to reach only 13°F, with wind gusts up to 20 mph creating biting wind chills.
Temperatures will plunge even further Sunday night, dropping to -5°F, followed by a bone-chilling high of just 3°F on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Safety Tips for Drivers
• Drive cautiously on untreated roads.
• Keep a winter safety kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, and water.
• Allow extra travel time and avoid sudden braking to prevent skidding.
Plan ahead for the coldest temperatures of the season, and stay tuned for updates.
