Indianapolis, IN – Firefighters in Indianapolis quickly contained a car fire inside the Blackford Street Garage on the IU Indianapolis campus. The fire broke out at 725 W. Michigan Street when the driver of a red Saturn Vue entered the third floor of the garage.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the engine compartment ignited as the driver approached a ramp. The driver stopped, evacuated, and called 911. Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the vehicle. Crews deployed supply lines and handlines to contain the fire.

Their fast response kept the flames from spreading to other vehicles. The fire caused significant damage to the Saturn Vue but did not result in injuries.

Authorities have not determined the cause of the fire. Investigators will assess the vehicle to identify potential mechanical failures. The parking garage remained open, though sections were briefly restricted for safety.

Fire officials remind drivers to maintain their vehicles and stay alert for smoke or unusual odors. Anyone witnessing a car fire should evacuate and call 911 immediately.
