Des Moines, IA – Iowans should prepare for dangerously cold temperatures starting Monday as an Arctic front moves through the region. Wind chills may plummet to -20°F, creating hazardous conditions for those outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, below-zero wind chills are expected Monday into Tuesday, especially in northern Iowa. Temperatures on Monday will peak at just 20°F, with lows dropping to 4°F overnight. The icy conditions will be accompanied by a slight chance of light snow late Monday into Tuesday morning, particularly in southern parts of the state.

Officials recommend limiting time outdoors and wearing layers to prevent frostbite, which can occur within minutes in extreme cold. Drivers should also exercise caution on I-80 and other major roadways, as gusty northwest winds may cause blowing snow and reduce visibility.

Looking ahead, temperatures will remain bitterly cold Tuesday, with highs reaching only 19°F and wind chills dipping to -5°F. A slight warm-up begins Wednesday, as highs climb to 29°F, and Thursday promises a brief January thaw with temperatures reaching 42°F.

While the weather eases later in the week, nighttime lows will still hover in the teens, requiring continued vigilance for residents venturing outside. Stay updated with local forecasts and take precautions to ensure safety during this extended cold snap.
